On 20 January 2026, Asia Legal LLC held an internal seminar at its office titled “Comparison of GDPR and Vietnam Law on Personal Data Protection of Fundamental Aspects”. The content was prepared and presented by Marie and Nguyễn Quỳnh.
The seminar took place shortly after the Personal Data Protection Law and Decree No. 356/2025/ND-CP came into force, introducing new compliance requirements for organizations and individuals. As a result, demand for personal data protection advice has continued to grow.
The session aimed to give participants a clear overview by comparing the GDPR, a global benchmark, with Vietnamese law. It highlighted Vietnam’s level of alignment as well as its distinct regulatory approach. The seminar also served as a forum for the Asia Legal team to exchange insights, update knowledge, and shape practical compliance solutions for clients.
Key topics included scope of application, data processing principles, rights and obligations of relevant parties, consent mechanisms, Data Protection Impact Assessments, international Transfer Impact Assessments, requirements for personal data protection departments and the sanction. These issues were illustrated through selected case studies, including Meta Ireland (2023), a Croatian telecommunications company (2025), and Zalo (2025).
Through presentations and open discussion, the seminar clarified major similarities and differences between the GDPR and Vietnamese personal data protection laws, while offering valuable practical insights. It also laid a solid foundation for Asia Legal to further strengthen its specialized advisory services in this field.
